Spring is one of the most important times of the year for garden care. As the days get longer and temperatures begin to rise, plants begin to grow again and outdoor spaces quickly come back to life.

A few simple jobs at the start of the season can help your garden stay healthy, colourful and enjoyable all season long.

We spoke to Dave from Helmrig for his top tips on garden maintenance during spring.

Start Spring with a Garden Tidy-Up

After winter, gardens often need a good clear-out. Removing fallen leaves, dead plant material and broken branches from flower beds, lawns and pathways instantly freshens the space and helps prevent pests and disease. This is especially useful for newer gardens, where soil may still be settling and early planting needs space to establish.

Clearing the garden also makes it easier to see what plants are returning and where you may want to add new planting later in the season.

Improve Your Garden Soil for Spring Planting

Healthy soil is the foundation of a successful garden. Loosen compacted soil in beds and borders, remove weeds, and add compost/well-rotted organic matter to boost nutrients. This gives plants the best possible start and encourages strong root growth and the organic matter you add will help break down clay content and improve drainage.

Prune and Trim Carefully

Spring is a great time to prune many shrubs and plants, but timing matters. Remove dead or damaged branches and lightly shape plants to encourage fresh growth. If you’re unsure, check which of your plants prefer pruning later in the year to avoid accidentally cutting back new buds. Prune but with caution!!! Bird nesting season is now upon us so be extra vigilant around dense shrubs and hedgerows.

Lawn Care Matters

Lawns often show signs of wear after winter. Rake away moss and thatch, trim the edges, and consider aerating if the ground feels compacted.

Early spring is also a good time to feed your lawn and overseed bare patches, so it grows thicker and greener as temperatures rise. Feed with a low concentrate of Nitrogen, with higher percentages of Potasium and Phosphorous. Application of fertilisers with Iron will help check moss development.

Plant Flowers and Shrubs for Spring and Summer

Spring is ideal for planting new flowers, shrubs, and even vegetables. Choose plants suited to your garden’s light and soil conditions, and remember to water regularly as they establish. Added to this Spring is also the perfect time to sow bare areas in beds with summer annuals – these annuals are perfect for attracting pollinators into your garden.

Planning now means you’ll enjoy colour and texture throughout the warmer months.

Check Fences, Sheds and Garden Features

Winter weather can cause wear and tear to fences, sheds, raised beds, and other timber features. Inspecting them and dealing with small repairs now prevents them from becoming larger problems later down the line.

Minor repairs or a fresh coat of paint or stain can extend their lifespan and give your garden a refreshed appearance.

Prepare Your Patio and Outdoor Seating Areas

Preparing your patio is an often-overlooked part of spring garden care, but spring is the perfect time to clean patios, decking and outdoor furniture. Pressure washing paving, clearing moss from paths and wiping down furniture helps create a welcoming outdoor space ready for warmer days.

Creating a comfortable seating area early in the season means you’ll be ready to enjoy your garden as soon as the weather improves.

Encourage Wildlife

Spring is a busy time for birds, bees, and other wildlife. Adding wildlife-friendly plants, bird feeders, or leaving a small natural area can help support local ecosystems while bringing more life and movement into your garden.

Spring Into Garden Success

With a little attention this spring, your garden can quickly become a space you’ll enjoy all season long. Whether it’s a quiet morning coffee, a family barbecue, or simply a view to admire from indoors, caring for your outdoor space helps make your house feel even more like home.
