Getting your garden summer ready

We are now officially in summer and although the weather’s not always perfect, you can prepare your outdoor space for the sunny days to come and make it the perfect place to enjoy with your family and friends. Take a look through these handy tips to transform your Rowland garden into a summer haven…

First things first

The best way to start tackling your garden project is to tidy up first: sweep up any dead leaves, mow the lawn, remove weeds, prune bushes and plants, and rotate soil to freshen it up, adding a new layer of compost for a well-maintained look.

Garden Tools

Cleaning any paved areas will also make a big difference – you can either use a scrubbing brush with warm water and washing up liquid, or simply jet wash (using the lowest setting first).

All hands on deck!

If you want to add some structure to your garden, creating a decked area will provide the ideal space for relaxing, entertaining guests and dining al-fresco, whilst keeping your grass looking pristine.

Placing garden furniture on your decking will make it a comfortable and inviting place to while away your summer days and admire your lovely garden. You could even add in a sunshade or pergola to bring a stylish yet practical design element.

Garden furniture

There are a few options you can go for with garden furniture – it doesn’t have to break the bank. Buying new is always an option if you have seen the perfect seating to complement your garden or you just want to get something fabulous right now!

Another option would be to upcycle your current garden furniture to give it a new lease of life. You can refresh it by doing as much as sanding it down and repainting it, or as little as cleaning it and adding some colourful cushions to spruce it up a bit.

Finally, for the DIY-savvy, making your own garden furniture can be a fun and exciting project which will give your outdoor space a unique and personal feel. Using reclaimed pallets can be an effective way to create seating areas and tables that will look incredible for a fraction of the cost of buying new!

Those summer nights…

There’s nothing better than spending all day in your garden in the glorious sunshine with your friends and family. But the fun doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down…

If you’re a little chilly in the evenings, you could add a chiminea or firepit to your seating area for a warm and cosy feel. Even better – some firepits double up as BBQs, so there’s no need to buy both! Or you could simply add some warm blankets so you can wrap up while you enjoy your garden into the evening.

Solar powered lights are also a fantastic way to illuminate your garden and enhance its features without the need for an outside power source. There are so many styles of solar lights to choose from, so you’re sure to find the perfect ones to complement your new garden.

Colour

Adding bright and exciting colours to your garden will bring it to life and give it a warm and inviting feel. There are lots of ways you can add a pop of colour: using bright plant pots, selecting colourful outdoor furniture or painting existing furniture in bold colours, adding a variety of plants to give an instant lift to the space, or even just adding vibrant cushions and throws to your seating area.

If you prefer more subtle changes, you could always paint your fence or shed to transform your garden using more natural tones.

We hope you enjoyed our summer garden tips and are ready to create an outside space as beautiful as inside your Rowland home. Happy gardening!
