Sarah Bottomley and her partner Matt are first time buyers and proud owners of a Rowland home in Blackrod.
Sarah started using her Instagram account, ‘From Brick to Beautiful’ to share her journey from buying a Victoria three bedroom detached house off plan. Sarah shares her inspiring interior design tips that has attracted more than a thousand followers. Rock FM went along to meet her at her new home.
Rock FM: It is a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for inviting us into your home. Were you looking for a new build?
Sarah: ‘We thought a new build would be the best for us as we don’t have time for a renovation project.’
Rock FM: What made you go for a Rowland Home?
Sarah: ‘We hadn’t heard about Rowland Homes before. We looked at some other new build sites and they were quite big and we wanted something that was a bit more personal and smaller. We heard from one of Matt’s family members that the Rowland site was coming up in Blackrod and that they were good builders. Also, that the site that they were building on was good too.’
‘We had a look and they had a different feel and we loved the look of this house before we even had a look inside to be honest.’
Rock FM: What was it like buying a home off plan?
Sarah: ‘We reserved the plot before we saw the showroom in Preston because there are only five houses of this style on our site and this is the only one that is south facing and we wanted it for the sun in the summers. When we saw the show home, we still loved it with all the decor and they make it look really beautiful.’
‘It was hard when it came to us ordering our furniture. With this particular house, everything is on the opposite side to the show home. So, we had to bear that in mind. We had to think about the shape of the sofa and dining room table that suited the room. We did a lot of free hand drawings!’
‘I am a visual person so I could envision it how it would look but my partner did struggle with that side of it.’
Rock FM: What advice would you give to other house hunters looking at new builds?
Sarah: ‘I’d say think about how you would like your home to look. Things can be moved, sometimes it might be at an extra cost. Don’t wait until you are in. When you look at your house plan look at it carefully, it is easier to move things before they are built or at the time they being built.’
‘We knew we wanted a feature wall with a fire place and also for the TV to be high up on the wall. So we have had to get the TV aerial moved higher as well as the plug sockets than the standard position, so all the wires wouldn’t be trailing where the electric fire place would be. The heating thermostat got moved to another wall to not spoil the feature wall. Other people have an outside light where as we have a spotlight.’
Look at other show homes to get ideas for what you would want your house to be.
Rock FM: Finally, If you could describe your home what would you say?
Sarah: ‘Definitely, cosy! I wanted a cosy feel. Personal. It is completely different to any other Victoria house style. All the Rowland staff on site are very aware that they are still building and they don’t want to invade your privacy. We couldn’t get something out of the car boot and the site manager was over straight away and asked if we needed a hand to get it out. Everyone is dead friendly!’
