The 1st December in many households sees the return of not just the Christmas decorations from the loft but also the Elf on the Shelf. The mischievous little character rears his cheeky head across the globe, wreaking havoc and spreading fun in homes everywhere, and that includes here at Rowland Homes.
As our Christmas #shELFie competition launched last week, which sees us search for the most gorgeous Christmas shelf out there, we’ve decided to provide ideas for how to make your shelves as Christmassy and festive as possible
Add Christmas cheer to book shelves and libraries by hanging cascading fairy lights from the top shelf and incorporating tea light candles at different levels. This creates a warm glow in the evenings when your main lights are switched off.
Trinkets and ornaments are perfectly at home on decorative shelves and ledges. Mix and match pieces in the same tones and colour palates – we love white, grey, wood and silver for 2016. Think porcelain deer, silvery snowflakes, driftwood pieces and miniature white trees to create a contemporary Christmas look on a 3 or 4-tiered unit.
Not technically a shelf, fire place mantelpieces shouldn’t be neglected when you’re setting up your Christmas decorations. Stockings should of course be hung over the mantelpiece, but if you’re a traditionalist you could consider adding a nativity scene or for something a little more in vogue, a NOEL light bulb sign really adds a cool touch.
To ensure that warm Christmassy feeling is enjoyed throughout the house, extend Christmas to the kitchen with some simple festive touches. Holiday crockery doesn’t have to break the bank and if you’d rather not invest in a full dining set some patterned serving bowls and dishes, a mug set and seasonal tea towels should do the trick. Make a feature of these items by displaying them on kitchen shelves until the big day arrives, when you can then take them down to use at Christmas dinner.
